Don’t Miss the Moon’s Big Show This Week!

Get ready for a combo of a partial lunar eclipse and a supermoon! This celestial event will be visible across North and South America on Tuesday night, and in Africa and Europe on Wednesday morning, according to the AP. A partial lunar eclipse occurs when Earth moves between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow that covers part of the moon, making it look like a bite’s been taken out. With the moon a bit closer to Earth than usual, it’ll also look slightly bigger in the sky. This is one of three supermoons left this year. “A bit of sunlight is being blocked, so the moon will look a little dimmer,” explained Valerie Rapson, an astronomer from the State University of New York at Oneonta. NASA notes that eclipses happen four to seven times a year, and this one will be the second and final lunar eclipse of the year, after a faint one in March.
