A wonderful celebration of love and family!

Reader here once again, and as I previously mentioned, I was off last week, enjoying some rest and relaxation, while helping wrap up harvest on the farm.

But that’s not all I got up to.

Last weekend, before making the drive back to Yorkton, my parents, brothers, and Auntie Ivy headed to Calgary, to help some of our dearest relatives celebrate a major milestone.

You see, my Great Uncle Art and Great Aunt Avis were the guests of honour at a celebration of their 70th (!!!) wedding anniversary!

My parents, brothers and I with the guests of honour, at the celebration of their 70th anniversary in Calgary!

Their son Allan put together a wonderful afternoon of food, family and reconnection at the Glenmore Inn. I got to catch up with relatives that I hadn’t seen since I was a kid, as well as meeting some members of the family for the very first time!

It was awesome. The happy couple got married back in 1954, and rode the road of life together since then, taking life as it comes, but always together. And now, they’re into their 90s, with some health issues, but they love and cherish each other and their family as much today as they ever have, and it’s a beautiful thing to see.

Growing up, we were lucky, in that my Grandma and Grandpa Read lived in Conquest, just a mile from the family farm. Because of that, many relatives would come home to visit them, whether it be during the summer, or for big holidays like Thanksgiving, and they’d come and see us too, because we were so close by. That gave us a chance to get to know them and grow close with them as well, making big celebrations mean that much more.

Nowadays, for a variety of reasons, so many relationships don’t seem to stand the test of time. Sadly, many couples aren’t able to make things work, and they go their separate ways.

In my family, we’ve been very fortunate, as there have been some great milestones in 2024. In addition to Art and Avis marking 70 years, my brother Ward and his wife Aimee celebrated their 20th anniversary earlier this month, while my brother Curtis and his wife marked 15 years of marriage in June. My youngest brother Barrett and his wife Claudia celebrated their first anniversary in August, and my Mom and Dad, hit the 47-year mark in the spring.

It makes me so proud, and a little bit envious… I’m the only single guy left in the family! I guess I have some work to do! Haha!

Anyhoo… in honour of70 years of wedded bliss for my Great Aunt and Uncle, here’s a hit from 1954, when they entered into the bonds of holy matrimony!
